Abstract

Epidemiologic studies link greater distress with increased morbidity and mortality. Both major and minor stressful events may alter immune function in humans. Conversely, distress-reducing interventions such as relaxation may enhance some aspects of immune function. The authors review the relationship between stressful life events, depression, and measured changes in immune function. They also examine the evidence for a relationship between distress and carcinogenesis.
